Analysis of the Representation of News Related to Dalit/Tribal Women in Mainstream Journalism: Special Reference - Electronic Media (Aaj Tak, India TV, Zee News, Republic Bharat)

Abstract

In the mainstream of Indian society, Dalit women remain marginalized. The major reasons for this include the deeply entrenched mindsets of patriarchy, Manusmriti-based social order (Manuvad), and Brahminism. Today, the mainstream media, often referred to as the fourth pillar of democracy, also fails to adequately cover cases of exploitation and rape of Dalit women. For example, in the Hathras incident, upper-caste men brutally sexually assaulted a Dalit woman. The media's delayed coverage of the incident — almost two weeks later — and its apparent bias towards defending the accused indicate a prejudiced approach. In another case, Payal Tadvi, a medical student in Mumbai, committed suicide due to casteist slurs and reservation-related taunts by her peers. This incident too lacked serious social discourse in the media, clearly showing that Dalit women's issues are often ignored by news channels. Governments usually respond by announcing minimal compensation for victims' families, allowing the harsh realities and underlying social evils to remain hidden. As a result, Dalit women are increasingly turning to alternative platforms like YouTube and Facebook to voice their struggles, despite the risks of misinformation and fake news. In this context, the responsibility of mainstream media grows even greater — it must provide broader coverage to Dalit women's issues so that true news reaches the public and justice is served swiftly. Through this research paper, the study aims to evaluate the fourth pillar of democracy from a Dalit feminist theoretical perspective. It analytically examines the processes of news representation, the impact of such coverage, and the role of media in promoting social justice, focusing particularly on channels like India TV, Zee News, and Republic Bharat.

Abstract in Hindi Language: भारतीय समाज की मुख्यधारा में दलित महिलाएं हाशिए पर नजर आती है। इसके प्रमुख कारणों में पितृसत्ता,मनुवाद व ब्राह्मणवाद की मानसिकता स्थापित है। वर्तमान में देश का चौथा स्तंभ कहलाने वाला मुख्यधारा का मीडिया भी दलित महिलाओं के शोषण व बलात्कार की खबरों को जगह नहीं देता हैं। उदाहरण के तौर पर हम हाथरस की घटना को ले सकते है। जिसमें उच्च वर्ण के पुरूषों ने दलित महिला का वीभत्सता पूर्वक यौन उत्पीडन किया था। हाथरस की घटना का दो सप्ताह बाद कवर होना और आरोपियों के बचाव की ओर झुकाव दर्शाता है कि मीडिया पक्षपाती रुझान अपनाता है। मुंबई में पायल तडवी ने अपने साथ के सहपाठी एवं दोस्तों के जातिसूचक शब्दों और आरक्षण के तानों से परेशान होकर आत्महत्या कर ली थी। इस घटना पर भी मीडिया में किसी गहन सामाजिक विमर्श की कमी रही, जिससे यह स्पष्ट होता है कि समाचार चैनलों द्वारा दलित महिलाओं के मुद्दों को नजरअंदाज किया जाता है। सरकारें भी पीड़िता परिवार के प्रति न्यूनतम जिम्मेदारी निभाते हुए मुआवजे का ऐलान कर देती हैं, जिससे इन घटनाओं की सच्चाई और सामाजिक बुराई बच जाती है। इस प्रकार दलित महिलाएं अपनी आवाज़ मुख्यधारा के मीडिया तक न पँहुचा पाने के कारण यूट्यूब, फेसबुक जैसे वैकल्पिक प्लेटफ़ॉर्म्स का सहारा ले रही हैं। जहाँ भ्रामक एवं फेक खबरों का डर भी बना रहता है। ऐसे में मुख्यधारा की मीडिया का दायित्व और बढ़ जाता है कि वे दलित महिलाओं की खबरों को अधिक से अधिक स्थान दे। जिससे समाज में सही खबर लोगों तक पहुंचे व आरोपियों को जल्द से जल्द सजा मिल सके। इस शोधपत्र के माध्यम से लोकतंत्र के चौथे स्तंभ को दलित नारीवादी दृष्टिकोण सिद्धांत से परखना है। इसमें इंडिया टीवी, जी न्यूज, रिपब्लिक भारत  टीवी आदि चैनलों के अंतर्गत दलित महिलाओं से संबंधित खबरों की प्रस्तुतिकरण प्रक्रिया, उनके प्रभाव और सामाजिक न्याय की दिशा में मीडिया की भूमिका का विश्लेषणात्मक अध्ययन किया गया है ।
